SWA 2012: Safe handling and use of CNTs

SWA_200This document, published by Safe Work Australia (SWA) in 2012, provides guidance on the safe handling and use of carbon nanotubes for all persons directly or not directly working with manufactured nanomaterials. The document offers two approaches to manage the risks associated with the handling of nanomaterials:

  • Risk management with detailed hazard analysis and exposure assessment; and
  • Risk management by control banding.

Control banding is a simplified form of the risk management approach, where specific inhalation, dermal, and environmental controls are recommended based on potential level of exposure. It is noted that the controls should be supported by appropriate administrative controls.

This guidance document was prepared in support of SWA’s Nanotechnology Work Health and Safety Program, and provides specific safe-handling recommendations applicable to a range of nanomaterials, with carbon nanotubes specifically highlighted. A risk management tool is also included in the appendix.
