Prof. Rob Aitken is CEO at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) and the Founder and Director of SAFENANO. He leads IOM's work programme on nanotechnology risk which encompasses a range of Horizon 2020 projects and the provision of Scientific Services in toxicology, exposure monitoring and risk assessment. His main scientific interests are in exposure and risk assessment of fine particles and he has contributed more than 50 publications on these issues.
Rob is on the advisory board of several industrial, academic and government organisations including the Nanofutures European Technology Integrating and Innovation Platform and the Integrated Nano-science and Commodity Exchange (INSCX). In addition he has been Principal UK Expert on Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) issues to ISO 299 Nanotechnologies and a member of OECD Working Party on Nanomaterials. He was until recently a Member of the European Commission, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies Program Expert Advisory Group. He holds the title of Honorary Professor at Heriot Watt and University in Edinburgh.
Rob has been at IOM for over 40 years and a member of the Board of Management since 2002 and was appointed to the role of CEO in November 2016. Rob was instrumental in establishing our successful Strategic Consulting division and in the set-up of our SAFENANO business in 2006. In 2012 Rob then relocated to Singapore to set-up our first overseas business as Managing Director of IOM Singapore before returning to the UK as Chief Executive in 2016.
