Latest nanotech standards

Date: 07/11/2017

The latest in ISO’s 80004 series of vocabulary standards has been published, with terms and definitions provided for graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials and includes related terms naming production methods, properties and their characterisation.

This 13th part (ISO/TS 80004-13:2017) is intended to facilitate communication between organisations and individuals in research, industry and other interested parties and those who interact with them.

A raft of standard are under their 5-yearly review and a number of new Standards projects have been initiated, covering topics areas related to characterisation, materials specification and safety. These include the development of standards on the measurements of particle size and shape distributions by scanning electron microscopy and accompanied by guidelines for the collection and sample preparation of airborne nanoparticles for microscopy techniques; a photocatalytic activity assay for nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions; materials specification for antibacterial silver nanoparticles, and separate documents on considerations for in vitro studies of airborne engineered nanomaterials and performing toxicokinetic studies of nanomaterials.

Progress with the review of existing standards and the development of new documents can be followed on ISO’s TC229 Nanotechnologies work programme homepage.
