HSE 2013: Using nanomaterials at work

HSE_16This document, published by the HSE in 2013, provides guidance on controlling occupational exposure to manufactured nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and other biopersistent high aspect ratio nanomaterials (HARNs).

Aimed at employers, it provides recommendations to protect employees handling nanomaterials in the workplace during supply, use, clean-up and disposal. The guidance includes specific recommendations for engineering controls and personal protective equipment. It also provides considerations for implementation of appropriate policies such as risk assessments, employee training, and regulations for proper waste and disposal.

The document describes how to control exposure to specific nanomaterials in the workplace, including suggestions for appropriate risk management strategies and control measures. General guidance principles applicable to all nanomaterials are described, with differences in approach for CNTs and other HARNs highlighted in the text.
