Prof Rob Aitken is Founder and Director of SAFENANO and is Managing Director of IOM Singapore with overall responsibility for the development of IOM’s business in Asia.
Rob leads IOM's work programme on nanotechnology risk which currently encompasses SAFENANO, more than ten major European Commission FP7 framework projects and major public reviews for Government Agencies in the UK and elsewhere. His main scientific interests are in exposure and risk assessment of fine particles, including nanoparticles, and has contributed more than 80 publications on these issues. He is the UK Scientific Coordinator for the EU Regulatory Framework Project NANOREG and chairs the Safety Working group of the European Technology Platform (ETP) NANOfutures and sits on their management board. Rob is on the advisory board of several other organisations including the Integrated Nano-science and Commodity Exchange (INSCX). In addition he has been Principal UK Expert on Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) issues to ISO 299 Nanotechnologies and a member of OECD Working Party on Nanomaterials. Until recently he was an appointed expert to the European Commission, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies (NMP) Program. In Singapore Rob chairs the recently formed nanOsing collaboration in nanotechnology risk and innovation involving NUS, NTA and A*Star, amongst others, and is a member of both SPRING and SCIC nanotechnology committees. He project Director/Principle Consultant in ongoing research projects for The Workplace Safety and Health Institute (WSHI) and Public Utilities Board (PUB) on understanding and managing various aspects of nanotechnology risk. Rob also holds the title of Honorary Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh,UK.
