Framework 7:
NANEX
Development of Exposure Scenarios for Manufactured Nanomaterials
The IOM is coordinating a European project called NanEx, which is funded by the European Commission under the FP7 programme (247794) and aims to collate currently available information on occupational and consumer exposure and environmental release and available risk management measures. NanEx is a 12 month project, which officially started on the 1st December 2009. Apart from the IOM, 10 other organisation from across Europe are collaborating on NanEx.
NanEx will focus on three types of MNMs: (1) carbon nanotubes; (2) mass-produced nanomaterials (TiO2); and (3) specialised nanomaterials (nano-silver). Information from the peer-reviewed and gray literature will be reviewed and a small number of case illustrations will be carried out, followed by a gap analysis and definition of future research needs. The exposure information will be entered into an exposure scenario catalogue database.
During the course of NanEx we will organise a number of workshops, the first on 8 March 2010 at the Museé Olympique in Lausanne to discuss the data requirements for describing the exposure scenarios. Towards the end of the project, a workshop will be organised to present the gap analyses and define future research needs. Finally, results of NanEx will be presented at the Nanosafe conference in Grenoble, France in November 2010.
