Discussing the safe development of nanotechnology
Created by assoceditor on 27/06/2011 13:27:30

In a recent interview, Prof. Christofer Hierold discusses the opportunities of nanotechnology and the need for safe development.

Professor Christofer Hierold, researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich, discussed the opportunities of nanotechnology and the need for safe development in a recent interview with Simone Ulmer.

According to Prof. Hierold, the term "nanotechnology" covers a multitude of different technologies, and so a differentiated view of it is needed. He says that, to avoid risks and hazards, these must be analysed for each specific example of materials, structures and their applications.

Questions posed during the interview include:
  • What would the world look like without nanotechnology?
  • Do we have the technology firmly under control, or are we leaving problems for succeeding generations?
  • ETH Zurich is involved in risk assessment, either through research projects or by setting up a precautionary matrix for synthetic nanomaterials. What else needs attention?
  • Your research group works with carbon nanotubes, whose effect is often compared to asbestos. How dangerous are they really?
