A short history of the toxicology of inhaled particles
Created by assoceditor on 03/08/2012 10:11:09

A recent article published in Particle & Fibre Toxicology provides an insightful review of the history of inhalation particle toxicology.

An article published recently in the journal Particle & Fibre Toxicology, entitled "A short history of the toxicology of inhaled particles", provides an insightful review of the development of knowledge in the area of the toxicology of inhaled particles over the last 40 years.

Written from the personal perspective of the authors - Ken Donaldson, University of Edinburgh Centre for Inflammation Research, and Anthony Seaton, University of Aberdeen – the review discusses some of the major landmarks in inhalation particle toxicology research, with a focus on:
  • The first descriptions of dust-related occupational lung disease;
  • The 'big three' of particle toxicology – quartz, asbestos and coal;
  • The rise of particle toxicology;
  • Ambient particles; and
  • Nanoparticle toxicology.
The authors write:

'The era of particle toxicologists who originally saw coalmine dust, quartz and asbestos as the big problem and were involved in the invention of particle toxicology as a discipline is almost over. Nanotoxicology now dominates particle toxicology and for many people nanoparticle toxicology is particle toxicology. In fact the issues surrounding the big three have never been fully resolved and there remain many unanswered questions in conventional particle toxicology […] The avalanche of funding that flowed into nanotoxicology will end soon, new particles and new issues will arise, and many questions remain in conventional particle toxicology, so there will always be a place for particle toxicologists.'
