The importance of studying the bio-durability of carbon nanotubes

SAFENANO’s Julia Varet explores the importance of studying the in vitro biodurability of Carbon nanotubes as part of an integrative risk assessment.



Carbon nanotubes (CNT) display many unique and valuable properties and are therefore of widespread interest for industrial and commercial applications. However, for these novel materials there is an urgent requirement to establish an appropriate assessment of potential hazard and risk.

It has been postulated that the toxicity of fibres is related to fibre length, bio-persistence and dose; a hypothesis known as the ‘fibre paradigm’. It is currently considered that some CNT conform to this paradigm. 

As according to the paradigm the bio-persistence of a long fibre in vivo is a critical parameter driving pathogenicity, SAFENANO’s Julia Varet explores this concept for CNT, providing an explanation of the background concept for such tests and an overview of what we know from key literature published on the topic.
